How to avoid food intolerances abroad

Updated: Jan 18

Traveling can be exciting and enriching, but it can also be a source of concern for people with food intolerances or allergies. New environments, unfamiliar foods, and language barriers can make it difficult to manage these conditions, but there are steps you can take to stay safe and healthy during your travels.

1- Do your research

Before traveling, research the local cuisine and common foods in your destination. If you are allergic to certain foods, learn how to recognize them in the local language. You may also consider researching restaurants that offer allergen-free options.

2- Pack snacks

It's always a good idea to bring allergen-free snacks in your travel bag.

You can pack cereal bars, fresh or dried fruits, nuts, or raw vegetables to snack on between meals. Snacks can also be useful in case of emergencies when you are unable to find allergen-free food.

3- Carry an allergy/intolerance card

It's important to be able to communicate your condition to those who prepare or serve food. If you don't speak the local language, an allergy or intolerance card can be helpful. This card, available in multiple languages, explains your food restrictions to those who prepare food.

4- Talk to locals

Locals often know their own cuisine well and can give you helpful advice on allergen-free foods or restaurants that offer allergen-free options. Don't hesitate to ask your Airbnb host or local tour guide for recommendations on restaurants and foods to avoid.

5- Bring your medication

It's important to ensure that you have enough medication for the duration of your trip. You should also bring a first aid kit containing medications for allergic reactions, such as an antihistamine and an auto-injectable dose of adrenaline if prescribed by your doctor.

6- Consult local practitioners
